The oldest road rally (according to Google) is the Rallye Monte-Carlo, which started in 1911. I can only imagine the vehicles in this event and how many issues they had (or didn't have due to non-existent electronics). Fast forward over 100 years, and now we have a wide range of roadworthy vehicles that make appearances in rallies around the world. A majority of these higher-end rallies are filled with modern-day sports cars and supercars from Porsche to Lamborghini, McLaren, and everything in between.

Some brave drivers decide to bring vehicles that were produced in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, which are some of the most iconic and revered vehicles in modern automotive history. Skyline, GT40, Pantera, Shelby Cobra, NSX, and many more have been seen in these events. With the enormous gap in power and technology over the past 40 or so years, this makes things interesting.

We recently purchased a 1983 Audi UR Quattro to restore and eventually (hopefully) rally! This is one of the legendary rally cars of the 80s that the entire Audi brand is built off of. As we have seen with some of these older cars, they can have trouble being driven that many miles in a short period of time. The clutch goes out, something starts leaking, the car starts to smoke and overheat—these are all unfortunate realities of rallying older vehicles.
Do you think it's possible to have a pre-2000s rally car without any issues, or are they inevitable? Would you miss the modern-day creature comforts, or would you enjoy the raw driving experience that these classics offer?

Rallying an older car there is allot more prep that needs to been done. Other than brakes, tires, fluids, and the normal inspection, you need to have parts and tools ready. When talking parts you need to have things you can't find at autozone. My skyline has aftermarket crank sensors and o2 sensor, so I carried one of each. I carried extra oil filter and oil. I also had two sets of spark plugs and extra coil pack. Had bag of hand tools and small rachet set.
Then you have put some miles on the old car. Check for oil consumption, potential failures. I drove atleast 1000 miles before the rally.
I have rallied my skyline twice made ba…
